A Journey Through the Psalms | Drawn Out

He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters
Psalm 18:16

He brought me into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
Psalm 18:19

The waters that swirled around David represent his enemies and ultimately death. God reached down and drew David up, just as he did with Moses (Exodus 2:10). In both instances the water represents that which could overcome and destroy, but the Lord is faithful to draw his children out from the pit of destruction (Psalm 40:2).

We can all sit and think of the many things causing us to drown: work, relationships, sickness, emotional pain. In all of these things we can have confidence that the God who rescued David and Moses is the same God that left his throne to rescue us.

Even more, God does not rescue us reluctantly or out of pitty, but rather, He “delights in us.”

WHAT?

How can a perfect and holy God look upon those that are broken and delight in them? “Why Jehovah should delight in us is an answerless question, and a mystery which angels cannot solve; but that He does delight in His beloved is certain, and is the fruitful root of favours as numerous as they are precious” (Spurgeon).

Remember Christian: We are never beyond His help, and we are never beyond His love.

Recently in my life I have experienced the very things that I mentioned above. My husband and I have had some pretty big life decisions to make and my immediate reaction is to feel completely overwhelmed. It really does feel as though the waters are rising all around and there is nothing that can be done. It is a great comfort to know that the God who rescued Moses and David is the God that will walk with us through every decision, trial, and victory.
